Why is my rent marked as unpaid even though I paid by SEPA direct debit?

Updated over 3 months ago

When paying your rent via SEPA direct debit, it may happen that your rent temporarily appears as “unpaid” in the system, even though the amount has been debited from your bank account. This is usually due to processing times between banks.

Why does this happen?

When you make a SEPA payment, the transaction can take several days to be finalized and registered by Wellow’s system. The steps are:

  • Debit from your account – the amount is withdrawn once the direct debit is initiated.

  • Bank processing – the transaction goes through several validation stages between your bank and Wellow’s bank.

  • Finalization – once complete, the payment is recorded and your status is automatically updated.

During this time, your rent may appear as “unpaid” or “pending,” and automatic reminders may be sent.

Should I worry if I receive an unpaid notice?

No. There is usually no need to worry if:

  • The SEPA debit was initiated on the correct date.

  • The amount has been withdrawn from your account.

Unpaid notices are often generated automatically during the processing period.

What if the status doesn’t update?

If your payment is still marked as “unpaid” after the usual timeframe (3–5 business days):

  • Contact your bank to confirm the debit was finalized.

  • Reach out to Wellow at [email protected] to verify whether the payment has been received.

How long does a SEPA debit take?

On average, SEPA direct debits take 3–5 business days to process, though it may be slightly longer during certain periods (e.g. summer holidays).

Summary

SEPA processing times are normal. As long as the debit was initiated correctly and the funds were available, the “unpaid” status will update automatically once the process is complete. If in doubt, you can always check with your bank or contact Wellow support.
